Don't put all your eggs in one basket

Yesterday, I asked a teacher some replacement lessons concerning things above, he taught me this idiom: Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
It means giving yourself several different possibilities rather than relying on one particular course for success. Indeed he teaches at not only our school but other universities and companies. He is also a writer of the Japan Times and some magazines regarding sumo.
Well, I understand what he wants to say. I need several things to follow in my life because I can be depressed if I rely on just one matter. I learned the importance of the balance in life years ago. But I thought at the same time that it would be hard for me not to belong one working place, I mean free lance job as he does.
