English through lyrics
I also took the class titled "English Through Lyrics".
In the class, we listened Tom Well's one of his songs "Diamonds & Gold", and filled in the blanks in the lyrics.
His voice was not so clear and difficult to catch, but I learned a lot by this song. I want to leave notes here.
*violet... violet color is the symbol of love or sadness.
*ladder... social ladder
*mad as a hatter... hatter is a person who makes and sells hats.
This idiom is from a character in Lewis Caroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Because of the chemicals usen in hat-making, workers often suffered from mercury poisoning, which can cause loss of memory and damage to the nervous system (OXFORD).
*thin as a dime... skinny
*small-time... not very important or successful. =petty
*Napoleon... actually, he was so small man.
*stay in the saddle... continue to try
*disciple... someone who believes in the ideas of a great teacher or leader, especially a religious one (LONGMAN)
*hobo... a person who travels from place to place looking for work, especially on farms (OXFORD)
